1. Listen and respond calmly
If a child tells you something concerning, listen carefully. Do not promise secrecy and do not ask leading questions. Reassure them that telling someone was the right thing to do.
2. Record the facts
Make a factual note of what you saw, heard or were told, including the date, time and people involved where known. Keep opinion separate from what was actually said or observed.
3. Report promptly
Contact the Carlisle Galaxy Welfare Officer or Club Secretary. If the concern involves the Welfare Officer, or you do not feel able to report it within the club, contact Cumberland FA safeguarding directly.
4. Do not investigate yourself
Your role is to pass on the concern, not to interview people, confront the person involved or decide whether abuse has taken place. Safeguarding professionals and appropriate authorities will determine the next steps.
Immediate risk
If a child is in immediate danger or requires urgent medical attention, contact the emergency services. Afterwards, inform the appropriate football safeguarding contact as soon as possible.
